Waimea Canyon is a large canyon, approximately ten miles (16 km) long and up to 3,000 feet (900 m) deep, located on the western side of Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands.

Within the park boundaries are the Thurston Lava Tube, a lava tube approximately 540 years old with a short hiking trail running through it, and the Kīlauea Caldera, skirted by the Volcano House Hotel, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, and the Jaggar Museum.

Wailua Falls,

Wailua Falls is an 173 foot waterfall located in Kauai, Hawaii that feeds into the Wailua River. There is a path to the bottom of the falls, but it is muddy, slippery and dangerous.
In ancient times, Hawaiian men would jump from the top of the falls to prove their manhood. There is another waterfall nearby named 'Opaeka'a Falls.

The canyon is carved into the tholeiitic and post-shield alkalic lavas of the canyon basalt. The lavas of the canyon provide evidence for massive faulting and collapse in the early history of the island. |
