Hike Hawaii

Hike Hawaii -- Great hiking territory with huge number of trails through the national and state parks.

Hiking will take you from barren volcanic desert to lush fern rainforests.

On the island of Oahu if you are a hiker, you simply must climb to the top of Diamond Head.

The general consensus at the time of writing is that Diamond Head Crater is approximately 100,000 years old. There have been questions on the age.

Hike early to avoid the heat. Gain over 550 feet over 1 mile and expect about a one and a half hour hike.

There is also the Top of the World Hiking. The Ko'olau Range is the long mountain that stretches 36 miles, defining the windward side of the island. From its meandering summit you'll find some of the most spectacular views on the island.

The leeward side of the range gently slopes toward the sea. Weather is a big question mark. More specifically, cloud cover, which can turn your view into a white out.

Hiking on the island of Maui brings our favorite 'Ohe'o Gulch, also known as Seven Sacred Pools.

There are 27 miles of trails inside Haleakala Crater, and the views from the inside are incredible. The catch is that you need to descend 2400 feet, and also ascend on your return.

Polipoli State Park is a wonderful example of the varied nature of the island. This hike will take you through a redwood forest.

Kauai offers more trails and better hiking than any of the other Hawaiian Islands.

You could spend an entire month, hike each and every day, and not see even half of the available trails.

If you plan to do a lot of hiking, we recommend you contact:

Division of State Parks
3060 Eiwa Street, #306
Lihu'e, HI 96766
(808) 274-3444

County of Kauai Parks & Rec
4444 Rice Street, #150
Lihu'e, HI 96766
(808) 241-4463

If you decide to overnight on some of your hiking trips, for the best sources of camping or hiking gear, we recommend Kayak Kauai in Kapa'a and Hanalei or Pedal 'n Paddle in Hanalei.

Nothing beats Tabis for walking in the streams and are just like felt-covered mittens for your feet.

Ah! Last but not least, the Big Island Hike Hawaii greets you with plenty of options. You can wander through a lush rain forest or walk a volcano crater floor, power up a snow-covered mountain or hike along an empty tropical beach.

Do take along hiking sticks and please consider the right type of footwear to hike Hawaii.
