Hawaii Rental Cars
|
Hawaii Rental Cars are necessary for you to have access to the incredible landscape that are the Hawaiian Islands. Whether it is a car, van, 4x4 vehicle or a snazzy sports car ... Hawaii has them all!
|

|
The large rental companies such as Hertz, National, Alamo and Avis all have desks at the main airports.
We highly recommend that you book your rental car BEFORE you come
to the Islands. Rates start at about $33 per day (at the time of this writing).
Just one more thing that you don't have to worry about once you arrive.
Not everyone will rent a Hummer, but they are available.

The rental competition is fierce in Hawaii so pricing should be quite similar. While it isn't completely necessary to rent a car if you are staying in Waikiki, you will probably still want to get around the island. Even if you plan to take a couple of guided tours, we still highly recommend renting a car for at least part of your stay.

If you are between the ages of 21 and 25 Dollar, Alamo and Enterprise are probably your best options. You will have to pay an additional $25 because you are young and 'might' be reckless, with the exception of Enterprise. They do not have any surcharge at the time of writing. If you are under 21, VIP and Paradise rentals will rent to 18 years and older.

On the Island of Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii, we highly recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle. It isn't by any means critical if you are staying solely on the island of Oahu, where they are few off road opportunities.

Don't forget to consider the all important Hawaii rental cars -- insurance coverage. There is an additional $3 tax per day, and you can also add between $10 and $18 each day by adding the (LDW) Loss Damage Waiver. This will protect you from Hawaii's no fault policy. This means that if you are in an accident, you are responsible for damage to the vehicle whether you are at fault or not. Many insurance policies and some credit card companies cover rental cars, so check in advance.
