Hawaii Luau
|
A Hawaii luau is often held in celebration of a special occasion. The celebration can be a wedding, family reunion or family birthday. If you are visiting Hawaii, the celebration is YOU!

The traditional Hawaiian luau has been around for centuries. It was originally intended as a spiritual event used to thank the gods for bountiful harvests. The celebration included the now famous hula performance accompanied by the feast. |
The main event within the luau is always the roasting of the pig in the ground. Other dishes that accompany the pig are laulau, lomi lomi salmon (finely sliced raw salmon marinated with onion and tomato), chicken long rice (a cross between soup and stew which is actually long cellophane noodles), haupia (coconut flavored custard pudding), and of course poi. Poi is a purple gray paste that is created from pounded taro root that has been steamed. Poi is a staple of the Hawaiian diet and it's always eaten with the fingers.

Most luau's are very similar to what you see on television or in movies. The show includes hula dancers and fire knife dancers twirling and swirling. Drinks are often fruit concoctions and the most popular is the mai tai. The majority of luau's include all-you-can-eat food and drinks for a set fee.

The Polynesian cultural Center has to have the best luau on the island of Oahu. They have a theater that will hold 2500 people and they are able to accommodate 1200 guests for dining at one time. The Mormon Church runs this luau so there will be no alcohol in the drinks.
On the island of Kauai you'll find an amazing luau at Smith's tropical paradise. It is surrounded by a huge garden setting and after dinner you will see the show in a separate area. Also, the Grand Hyatt posts an excellent luau in a beautiful setting.

The Big Island has an excellent hawaii luau 10 miles outside of Kona to the north. It is the Kona Village luau and it's a touch expensive. Priced at $89 plus drinks at the time of this writing. The grounds however are absolutely stunning and it also boasts the best food on the island.

On the island of Maui, the price is similar and different resorts all their luau's on different evenings. The production company Tihati produces five of the luau's on the island. The old Lahaina luau is probably your best choice. They are competent, and friendly and always make you feel welcome.
